During hard times, how we tackle the struggle can be a defining moment. For Ramone, the challenges he faced became stepping stones to his success.

Raised in poverty, Ramone’s grandmother encouraged him to rise above his circumstances. She told him that his caring nature was a perfect fit for nursing. When his older brother saw Ramone hanging around with the wrong crowd, he said “that’s not you”. These affirmations fed the seed of growing resolve in Ramone. Soon after, he attended a job fair, chatted with a Concorde Rep and picked up a brochure. By the time he circled the event, he’d read the entire brochure and returned to tell the Concorde Rep that he’d enroll the next day. Ramone entered the Medical Assisting program in Memphis.

Life took a harsh turn when he lost his brother and grandmother within a two-month span. He carried their obituaries in his backpack crying to them and God each morning before he caught a bus to campus. The encouragement of his grandmother echoed in his mind.

Validated as Someone Who Truly Cares

After graduating from the Medical Assistant program, Ramone’s fascination with the brain led him to the Polysomnographic Sonography program in Memphis.

In Polysomnographic Sonography, Ramone learned about the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. This work involves monitoring patients' brain activity during sleep to identify conditions like insomnia, sleep apnea or narcolepsy.

Ramone shared, “I learned so much with Mr. Lockhart. The hands-on instruction was so great that often I would still be at the school after class because I wanted to learn more.”

How Concorde Supported Me

However, Ramone didn't stop there. He entered and completed the Neurodiagnostic Technology program in Memphis.

As a Neurodiagnostic Technologist, he now uses sophisticated equipment to record electrical activities within the brain and nervous system. This helps physicians diagnose conditions like epilepsy, stroke and other neurological disorders.

Online Success Coach Kenneisha Willis made a significant impact on Ramone's educational journey. Ramone was wrestling over a final paper to complete his Associate Degree in Applied Science for Neurodiagnostic Technology.

Her faith in him inspired his writing that earned him 199 out of 200 possible points, while also moving his instructor to tears. Ramone graduated with honors.
