A Career as a Medical Assistant

Medical assistants help prepare patients for their appointments, gather and send lab samples, and help run the medical office, handling referrals appointments, payment, record-keeping and ordering supplies.

Primary Duties of a Medical Assistant Include:

  • Taking patient histories and vital signs (blood pressure, etc.)
  • Entering data into patient records
  • Handling administrative tasks, such as scheduling appointments and calling in referrals
  • Keeping supply inventories in treatment rooms and the office stocked
  • Gathering blood or other samples and preparing them for laboratory tests
  • Assisting doctors or nurses during examinations
  • Administering basic clinical tasks, such as cleaning and dressing wounds
