You hear it all the time. Especially around here. Nursing is one of the greatest occupations you, or anyone, can choose. It's a profession that's always in high demand, and that demand only promises to get higher as baby boomers age.

The rewards also are great personally in that, as a nurse, you get to help people in need feel better. You get to contribute positively to the health of your patients and the community around you.

Judith Evans, DNP, RN, Director of Concorde's Nursing Program in Orlando, FL, said, "There are many levels of entry into the profession of nursing - Licensed Practical Nurses, Associate's Degree Nurses and Bachelor's Degree prepared nurses. Of course, the pros and cons of each exist. The goal of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) is to have 80 percent of nurses entering into the profession to be bachelor prepared. However, it is fairly easy for the associate's degree nurse to complete a transition program from Associate's of Nursing Degree to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing or Master of Science in Nursing.

"Each education level to which a nurse progresses opens new doors of opportunity for upward career mobility."

Nursing provides flexibility and a variety of workplace opportunities

Becoming a nurse opens a vast array of disciplines, duties, types of patients and environments.

"You may enjoy working with children, adults, disabled individuals or even in other job areas which include hospitals or clinics such as residential care, assisted living, home health or even in the role of auditing charts or providing administrative oversight," Akins said.

"For those who enjoy helping others, nursing is a wonderful career option," Akins said.

While such traits are truly admirable, Evans cautions that you need to go into your chosen area with eyes wide open.

"The person needs to realize all that is involved...," she said. "Nursing is very rewarding. It is about caring, listening, thinking, organizing and leading. A nurse is able to make a difference in peoples' lives. A caring and compassionate nurse is considered as a guardian angel by patients."
