As part of Concorde Career College's commitment to the health care community, students and staff from the Memphis campus participated in the 2016 St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer Saturday, September 24. Despite the unusually hot and humid conditions in Memphis at this year's event, more than 8,000 total participants raised about $600,000 to further St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's mission of treating childhood cancer for thousands of children across the world at no expense to their families.

The Memphis campus contributed more than $1,000 to the health care community and massive fundraising effort. Forty-eight students and staff members registered for the walk this year with 28 actually participating. Prior to the walk, local businesses offered information and giveaways promoting a healthy lifestyle. There were opportunities to meet other teams and get to know other people in the health care community. Several local business and sports mascots were available for pictures which added to the fellowship of all the participants.

The 2016 St. Jude Children's Research Hospital's Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer followed a 2.5-mile path from the hospital's Memphis campus down historic Beale Street and along the picturesque Mississippi Riverfront, returning to the St. Jude campus for the finish line. Shenika Gorman, Student Services Advisor for Concorde-Memphis, coordinated the participation for the college. She stated that this year's walk was a bit of a challenge for several on the Concorde-Memphis team because of the heat, humidity and a hill located at mile two of the walk/run. However, she said that everyone cheered and coached each other to finish the race.

Volunteers for St. Jude were also placed along the route, cheering participants and handing out water and other refreshments. Without volunteer and donor efforts, St. Jude would not be able to continue its lifesaving and groundbreaking treatments for childhood cancer.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is a worldwide health care community leader in breakthrough treatments for childhood cancer, freely sharing its discoveries with other health care professionals. St. Jude has made a commitment to end childhood cancer without forcing families to pay for treatment, lodging, food, travel and other expenses. Concorde Career College-Memphis is honored to be able to help St. Jude in this commitment.
