Concorde Staff
Dozens of Concorde students, faculty and staff joined thousands of walkers on the streets of cities across the U.S. Sunday morning for the American Cancer Society's 16th annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk, raising funds to help create health care awareness and a world free from the pain and suffering caused by breast cancer.
Huge event for breast cancer health care awareness in Memphis, Tenn.
More than 12,000 walkers from Memphis, North Mississippi and surrounding counties, including students, faculty, and staff from Concorde's campuses in Memphis and Southaven, Miss., gathered at the Liberty Bowl for the walk and raised $500,000 for the cause.
Concorde donated $500 toward the cause.
"From research to education, prevention to diagnosis, and treatment to recovery, the American Cancer Society is there every step of the way for anyone facing a breast cancer diagnosis," said Tracy McFall, senior community manager for Making Strides, in a press release. "We support local breast cancer patients and their families through our patient support programs, which include lodging and transportation assistance, and we partner with our medical community to help provide the best care possible. It's because of Making Strides donations that we are also able to fund a breast cancer research grant right here in Memphis."
Huge strides made since 1993
Since 1993, more than 12 million Making Strides supporters have raised more than $750 million nationwide. While significant progress in the fight against breast cancer has been made, more needs to be done. Excluding cancers of the skin, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women. According to the American Cancer Society Cancer Facts & Figures 2016, an estimated 246,660 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 40,450 will die from the disease this year.
