Concordes new year resolutions for 2017

It's that time of year ... a time of giving, of family and fellowship, of celebration and revelry.

Of resolutions.

Yes, with a new year comes millions of New Year's resolutions, the majority of which don't last to the end of January. A New Year's resolution is a tradition most commonly found in the Western Hemisphere in which a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something nice, such as opening doors for people, beginning on New Year's Day. Resolutions can be of a personal nature or professional, humorous or serious.

In that spirit, we asked a good number of Concorde associates, faculty and staff, as they take a short break from helping students attain a health care degree, to give us their New Year's resolutions. And, like most, they ran the gamut from personal to professional, from frank to folly.

Take a break from working toward your health care degree and enjoy reading these resolutions.

The fun

"In 2017, I plan to lose weight again ... that is, the weight of negativity in order to increase positive energy! My goals for 2017 are still loading from 2016, 2015, 2014 … SYSTEM OVERLOAD PLEASE DELETE!"

The personal

"I love my job BUT I want to have more of a balanced workload versus personal life."

"After this year (I'm glad it's almost behind me), mine would be to not repeat the same mistakes I've made in 2016. Then, of course, the usual ones I never stick to - exercise, lose weight, save money, go to church regularly, etc. My real focus is to create my own happiness and success both personally and professionally."

"To find a better balance between work, home, and hobbies."

"I generally don't make New Year's resolutions, but I guess my ongoing resolution is to be a better version of my best self than I was the year before."

  • Lainisha McMiller Turner, MOT, OTR/L, Occupational Therapist Assistant Program Director, Concorde - Miramar

"One, be the best father and husband I can be. Two, eat healthier and exercise. Three, work harder to influence those around me to be kind and compassionate. And four, assist in finding a new career for 100 percent of all Concorde graduates!"

"In this new year, I will focus on all that is positive and good and be grateful for every day of life."

The professional

"I'd like to further my education, become more involved in the classroom (we tend to get stuck in our offices as a PD), get the students better prepared for becoming an MA, and lose weight."

"My resolution is to focus on healthy living for me and the campus. We will have lots of guest speakers and opportunities to shift to a more healthy lifestyle."

"Professional resolution: To use better time management, so I am able to meet and greet students daily throughout the campus. Personal resolution: Go for more walks in the evening."

"100 percent board pass rates."

  • Kevin McHugh, Medical Laboratory Technician Program Director, Concorde - Memphis

The esoteric

"Honestly, I must say that I live on a continuum so I don't think it is a New Year's resolution, rather a marker in my continuum. The next marker I have on my continuum of evolution is to restart my progress toward my doctorate and to engage in local community activities that are in line with my voice as an individual contributor to society. In accordance with my developmental goals and desire to increase my community outreach, I will seek to expand both my monetary and time contributions to the Hispanic Scholarship fund."
