Adaptability, especially in recognizing and valuing the cultural nuances of patients, is a critical trait of Occupational Therapy Assistants. Maria specifically pointed unique considerations when treating patients from Orthodox Jewish communities. "In Orthodox Jewish culture, it’s essential to recognize and respect boundaries between genders," Maria explained. "For instance, a male therapist cannot touch or even shake hands with a female patient. It's a matter of religious observance and personal space that we, as healthcare professionals, should honor."

When OTAs are open to learning about and respecting the cultural norms of patients, this helps build trust, strengthening therapeutic relationships.

In addition, the Muslim culture has specific guidelines about interactions between male therapists and female patients. "When treating a Muslim woman, it's crucial to understand that the same physical interaction norms that apply in other contexts might not be appropriate here," Maria noted. She emphasized the importance of being informed and respectful of these differences, stating, "In such a scenario, it could be beneficial to transfer the case to a female therapist to ensure the patient's comfort and uphold respect for her cultural and religious values."
