We've often used this space to detail to Concorde students and alumni the correct way to land that first job and get started in your health care career. But, in seeking out the right path to a health care career, there's also some value in learning what NOT to do.
The job search process is challenging. With so many avenues available today to explore, it's difficult to know which way to go sometimes. The website CareersInGovernment.com recently published a list of some habits that make the job search process more difficult than it already is.
Here are the seven habits CareersInGovernment.com listed which could make landing that health care career even more of a challenge.
7 habits which are ineffectual in landing a health care career
- Demonstrating a lack of focus. Do you know what you are looking for in a health care career? Or, are you indecisive about your career path? If so, you might want to make some firm decisions about the career in which you'd like to focus. This allows you to maximize time and energy toward a specific goal.
- Taking a one-size-fits-all approach. Does your job search strategy lack variety? Is your resume posted on just one or two boards or are you using the same resume for each position for which you apply? If your answer is yes, then consider beefing up your job strategy through diversifying your search.
- Not forging new relationships. Networking is a key component that often is missing from many job seekers' strategy. And remember, networking is not just about forging new relationships, but nurturing existing ones.
- Being inconsistent. Even if you're not submitting resumes daily, take the time to complete tasks that keep the momentum going, such as submitting your resume for professional review, researching a company of interest, or checking company updates on social media.
The final three ineffectual habits in landing a health care career
- Not following up. Following up is an essential job searching task. Not doing so might mean a missed opportunity. Follow up on the status of applications, new people that you meet and existing people in your network.
- Being unorganized. It's difficult to follow up if your health care career search lacks organization. Keep a spreadsheet of each position you have applied for or inquired about. Include pertinent information such as dates, links to websites, names and contact information.
- Displaying the wrong attitude. Having the wrong attitude can really hinder your success even if you are doing everything else right. This might include being overly pessimistic or arrogant. As you network, display a healthy balance of optimism and self-confidence. These are vibes that could be contagious, which might leave the recipient feeling good about you and confident in your abilities.
