Health care career jobs are expected to continue their torrid growth in 2017. In fact, according to statistics by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), health care occupations are expected to grow faster than any other industry - roughly 22 percent, or 3.2 million new jobs - by 2018. All of which makes the health care training provided by Concorde all the more vital to help the industry supply talented medical practitioners to satisfy the demands, which continue to be spurred by aging baby boomers and Generation X having children.

So, what will be the hottest health care occupations and who are hiring these much-needed professionals? The Boston Globe recently published the top 30 fastest-growing jobs by 2018 as projected by BLS, and to no one's surprise, the health care industry is well represented.

Health care occupations among the top 30 fastest-growing jobs

  • 29 -Occupational therapist assistant- The growing elderly population is vulnerable to chronic and debilitating conditions that require therapeutic services. These patients need assistance in their treatments, making OTAs vital.
  • 23 -Pharmacy technicians- The increasing number of middle-aged and elderly people are using more prescription drugs than ever before. This will spur demand for pharmacy workers. In addition, scientific advances lead to new drugs, and as more people obtain prescription drug coverage, pharmacy workers will be needed in growing numbers.
  • 17 -Physical therapist assistants- Job opportunities should be particularly good in acute hospital, skilled nursing, and orthopedic settings, where the elderly are most often treated. Job prospects should be especially favorable in rural areas, as many physical therapists tend to cluster in highly populated urban and suburban areas.
  • 16 -Medical assistants- As the health care industry expands as a whole, more practices and clinics requiring large support staffs are opening.
  • 14 -Dental assistants- While there are many opportunities for entry-level positions, some dentists prefer to hire experienced assistants who have completed a dental-assisting program, or have met state requirements to take on expanded functions within the office.
  • 12 -Dental hygienists- The demand for dental services will grow because of population growth, older people increasingly retaining more teeth and a growing emphasis on preventative dental care. To help meet this demand, facilities that provide dental care will increasingly employ dental hygienists to perform services that have been performed by dentists in the past.

These are just six of the more than 20 health care training programs Concorde offers those dreaming of a bright, rewarding career in health care. Even if the field of your interest isn't on this list, rest assured that, with the entire health care industry expanding annually, your career will be in demand as well.
