Concorde Staff
Feeling like it’s time for a fresh start? Whether you’re thinking about switching careers, going back to school, or tackling a long-time goal, Chantel Miller’s story might be the inspiration you need. A Concorde graduate, single mom, and proud grandmother, Chantel proves it’s never too late to reinvent yourself.
After training to become a medical assistant and working in the field for a few years, Chantel discovered her true passion: teaching the next generation of healthcare professionals. When the COVID-19 pandemic shifted her role as an instructor and program director at another institution to remote work, she made the most of the flexibility and earned her associate degree.
In 2022, she joined Concorde’s Grand Prairie campus as a Medical Extern Coordinator—but she didn’t stop there. Determined to keep growing, Chantel enrolled in Concorde’s online bachelor’s program in Healthcare Administration, skillfully balancing work, school, and life’s many challenges.
Today, she’s thriving in her new role as the Medical Assistant and Medical Office Administrator Extern Coordinator, showing that with hard work and determination, you can always take your career—and life—to the next level.
A Long-Held Dream Reignited
Chantel's journey to higher education began with a long-held dream. Earning her bachelor's degree was always in the back of her mind, but as a dedicated mom to two boys involved in sports, she found it challenging to prioritize her own aspirations.
"I had always wanted to do this, and once I became a mom, I just kind of put it on the back burner. And then it felt like I never found the time," she shared.
For more than 20 years, her dream simmered on the back burner, but Chantel never gave up hope. She knew that one day, she would find the time and opportunity to pursue her education. That opportunity came knocking when she joined Concorde.
Not only did she continue her fulfilling work with students, but she also found the time to pursue her online bachelor's degree as a Concorde Lamplighter.
A lamplighter’s role is to be a leader on campus by serving as a mentor and advocating for their classmates. These students are chosen by a Lamplighter committee that reviews their application and accomplishments on campus, such as GPA and attendance.
"I've always wanted to earn my degree, and I have tried a few times to do it online, but I was never motivated nor disciplined enough. But coming to Concorde, I wanted to be a motivating influence on my students as well," said Chantel.
Conquering the Statistics Challenge
Chantel's determination was put to the test when she encountered statistics. One night, while wrestling with a particularly complex formula, she found herself lost and frustrated.
Instead of letting it get the best of her, Chantel reached out to her instructor for help. He not only took the time to guide her through the formula but also shared a video that helped her understand the material in a new way. The hospital-based focus of the statistics class made it even more relevant and engaging for Chantel, connecting the numbers to real-world healthcare scenarios.
“The answer was really simple once he explained it to me,” she said. “That actually turned out to be one of my favorite classes!”
Why Statistics Matter in Healthcare
While you might not be crunching numbers all day, having a solid understanding of health statistics is a valuable asset. Healthcare professionals collect a lot of data on patients, such as vital signs, lab results, and demographics. Statistics help you make sense of this data.
Statistics also help healthcare professionals make informed decisions based on data and evidence, rather than relying on intuition or guesswork. This leads to better patient outcomes and improved healthcare delivery.
Overcoming Adversity with Resilience
Just as things were falling into place, Chantel faced a heart-wrenching challenge: her daughter-in-law's breast cancer diagnosis. This personal trial tested her resolve, but Chantel drew strength from her daughter-in-law's positive attitude and unwavering faith.
Chantel remained committed to her studies, motivated by her family. She proved that even in the face of adversity, pursuing personal growth is possible.
Reflecting on her daughter-in-law's experience, Chantel shared, "Her attitude alone was motivational enough for me to just keep pushing, because it's like she just had it in the bag. And now she's cancer-free!"
Lessons Learned and Gratitude Shared
When asked what she was most proud of accomplishing, Chantel didn't hesitate: "Being able to set aside time to do what I've always wanted to do."
She finally achieved her goal of earning a bachelor's degree, proving that it's never too late to pursue your dreams. But her journey taught her much more than just the value of a degree.
Chantel learned the importance of believing in herself, even when faced with self-doubt. She emphasized the need to "get out of your head" and take a leap of faith.
As a working mother, she also had to find a way to juggle her responsibilities while still making time for her studies. Her advice to others? "You have to find your balance. No one else's balance is going to work for you."
Perhaps most importantly, Chantel learned the power of community and support. She credits her family, friends, and colleagues for cheering her on and keeping her motivated throughout her journey.
"I want to thank my family. They were my biggest cheerleaders, my biggest support group and I love them immensely," she said.
"And then definitely the Concorde family because it's been amazing. My campus president, he gives me kudos. I appreciate all of the directors and my dean. They are definitely 100% supporters of anybody that wants to go back to school, and I love that the most about Concorde," Chantel shared.
