This Valentine's Day, there will undoubtedly be many gifts given, special messages and treats traded from the heart.
But, what if you could take steps to give your whole heart - to someone who desperately needs it to survive?
In addition to today being Valentine's Day, it's also National Donor Day.
It's a day to focus on all types of donation including organ, eye, and tissue that could benefit the nearly 114,993 people waiting for a life-saving organ.
As providers of health care training programs, we know how important organ donation is to saving lives.
Here are a few fast facts, from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, on why registration is so critical:
- 95% of U.S. adults support organ donation but only 54% are signed up as donors.
- Every 10 minutes another person is added to the waiting list.
- Only 3 in 1,000 people die in a way that allows for organ donation.
- One Donor can potentially save eight lives.
But often, from myths or misinformation, people choose not to donate.
Johns Hopkins Medicine created an infographic to set the record straight.
